What is life coaching?
Professional life coaching is a relationship between a coach and client or team that supports the creation of excellence and the achievement of extraordinary results.
Coaching is a compelling partnership focused on you and designed to empower you in making clear choices in alignment with your commitments in order to attain your desired goals.
It is an interactive, creative process intended to generate a safe, supportive space in which you can feel free to engage in exploration of new possibilities, be open to different perspectives, and access deeper insight and wisdom.
Life coaching is a present focused and forward moving partnership formed to enhance the skills, strengths and resources you naturally possess already; it is a relationship intended to inspire and elicit awareness, understanding, strategy and committed action from within you.
Professional life coaching can encompass work in all areas, including:
- relationships (personal, professional, family, intimate and social)
- business and career
- management of oneself (emotional, psychological, physical and spiritual health )
- management of one’s resources (time, finances, effort…)
- personal fulfillment
Any area in which you choose to focus in your coaching work is defined by the fundamental principles of the coaching relationship.
At KAGAN COACHING,
these principles are Possibility, Integrity and Trust.
These principles guide your transformation and allow you to fully actualize your tremendous personal and professional potential.

How does life coaching work?
Professional life coaching operates from a place of relationship. The objective of the coaching relationship is to empower you to maximize your potential. The process is founded upon clear consistent philosophies and is brought to life by the dynamic interaction between coach and client or coach and team.
The coaching process works by recognizing that you, the client, are fully capable, responsible and resourceful in your life. The premise underlying coaching is that you have the right to live as you choose and to choose according to your will. The coaching relationship is customized according to your individual needs. The strategy is formulated specifically for your character, strengths, challenges and particular life situations.
The life coaching relationship is a full partnership designed to enable you to identify core values, clarify goals and aspirations, and define your authentic self. This course of discovery occurs as the coaching process provides you with powerful questions and objective assessments and observations that enhance both self-awareness and the understanding of those around you.
As new perspectives are presented and different possibilities open up, you naturally set greater goals, establish clear priorities, make strategic, effective choices and take bold, responsible actions that are in alignment with your commitments. The more the coaching relationship develops, the greater your facility to engage a higher consciousness of possibility; you utilize the tools, concepts, models and principles afforded by coaching to access your natural abilities and inner wisdom in order to overcome obstacles, reach your goals, and experience a sense of personal fulfillment.
The key elements that make life coaching effective are:
- partnership established on trust and acceptance
- openness to being coached
- receptivity to new ideas and perspectives
- willingness to try out different approaches, even when they seem uncomfortable
- clear intention driving a strong commitment
- sense of accountability
- readiness to utilize the appreciative, positive, expansive approach
Every life coaching relationship is created with an underlying philosophy that ultimately colors every aspect of all interactions. At KAGAN COACHING the underlying philosophy is that all of life is about relationship and that all of us have a tremendous, unique gift to offer in every relationship.

What’s the difference between life coaching and therapy?
Life coaching differs from therapy in a number of ways.
First, life coaching is based on a view of the client as whole, resourceful, capable and responsible. It operates from a point of view that the client is able to take action to achieve the desired results starting now, regardless of current circumstances or personal history.
Psychotherapy, on the other hand, generally deals with healing a patient’s pain and resolving emotional/behavioral problems. The goal of therapy is to bring the patient to normal function, often by focusing on the dysfunction.
Coaching focuses on personal and professional growth and development, utilizing an action-oriented, strategic approach to create specific desired goals. It most often answers the question “What?” – as in “What is my goal?”, “What is my commitment?”, “What do I really want?”, “What’s next?” In this way life coaching is present-focused and forward-moving.
Therapy focuses on clearing disruptive situations which arise from the past and which stand in the way of a patient’s functioning in the present. Quite often it answers the question “Why?” – as in “Why am I doing this?”, “Why do I feel this way?”, “Why is this happening to me?” Therapy deals with analyzing the past, attempting to understand the root causes of behavior.
While coaching values the understanding of human nature and behavior, it does not rely on analysis of the past to elicit change. In particular, KAGAN COACHING operates from the perspective of people as dynamic beings whose present is not dictated by the past, rather whose future is consciously and purposefully created in the present

Who needs a life coach?
A life coaching relationship is not for everyone. It is designed primarily for people who already have a measure of success in their lives and want to build upon it. This can look many different ways. You may have attained a level of success in your life and now want to take it to a whole new level, aspiring to take the ‘pretty good’ and make it great. You may have accomplished much in a particular area of your life and want to be equally accomplished in a different area, one in which you currently feel stuck. You may experience bouts of progress, sporadically and partially achieving desired results only to lose momentum and not fully realize your goals….
Regardless of which category you fit into, working with a life coach provides you with opportunity to maximize your immense strengths, fully leverage your countless resources, and capitalize on the achievement you’ve already created in order to build upon it ever greater success. Coaching offers you support whether you’re looking to accelerate results, find balance and fulfillment, or fill in an undermining gap in skills or confidence. By engaging and channeling all your natural talents and all your character traits, coaching works to have you create the extraordinary life you desire and deserve.
To determine if you could benefit from coaching ask yourself the following questions:
- Do you find it valuable to hear an objective point of view and be asked to explore new perspectives when considering a life situation, challenge or opportunity?
- Are you ready to devote the time and the energy to making real changes in yourself, your relationships, your work and your life?
- Are you interested in growing and developing yourself personally and/or professionally?
- Would it be beneficial to you to be in a working partnership with someone who is trained, who believes in your greatness and who is fully committed to your success?
If your answer to the above questions is ‘yes’ then you are someone who would excel by utilizing a professional life coaching relationship.
Life coaching is for people who are ready to create for themselves a life they truly want. It is for people who desire to bridge the distance between where they are and where they want to be. KAGAN COACHING can provide just such a relationship to support you in propelling yourself forward in your life.

How long does life coaching take to see results?
This is a very individual thing.
Much depends on what your goals are - the breadth and scope of the work required to support you in reaching your desired goals.
Much depends on where you are starting – the core beliefs that are driving your choices and the habits you’ve incorporated that keep your life as it is now.
Much depends on how committed you are to see the desired results – how receptive you are to coaching, how open you are to trying out different approaches, and how willing you are to be uncomfortable at times.
From the very beginning, life coaching work affords you an opportunity to explore ideas, taking a new perspective on challenges and a fresh outlook on opportunities, propelling you on a different course of action. This naturally creates results. Even subtle changes in perspective can cause significant shifts in action, creating noticeable results immediately. The work then becomes a matter of constant course correction until the desired goals are achieved.
At KAGAN COACHING an underlying principle is that life rewards courageous, committed action. As soon as you set your will to accomplish a goal and begin to work consistently towards it, things start to happen. When you move in the direction of your desire, the universe moves with you, opening up all manner of opportunities you might not have even imagined possible. Simply making the choice to take action creates results.

How long does a person work with a life coach?
The length of a life coaching partnership varies greatly depending on your needs and preferences. For certain specific project coaching, a relatively short period of time working with a coach may suffice. For more comprehensive coaching, addressing bigger goals or deeper incorporation of coaching concepts, it may be useful to work with a life coach for a longer period. Many clients find an ongoing life coaching relationship to be beneficial in their continued work of self-development and in setting and attaining ever greater goals.
The following factors most influence the length of time a person works with a life coach: the type of goals, the frequency of coaching sessions, the commitment level to the goals, and financial resources available to support coaching.
At KAGAN COACHING a personalized program is designed for every client, incorporating a plan that considers every relevant factor and creating a strategy that meets the client’s needs and an approach that works.
